I am sure you have asked yourself this question at least once in your life. We all do, particularly when our humans resist our training efforts.

Why do we stay with humans in the first place?

Look at the things they impose on us! Leashes, fences, crates, baths, thermometers, vaccinations and humiliating outfits!

“If you can’t beat them, join them.”
— Jim Henson (Jim Henson’s Storyteller)

The practical reason is simple – survival!

If you think it is less true today than it was when we first formed an alliance with humans, think again! It is more true now than it ever has.

Let’s face it. Humans have taken over this planet. Anything that doesn’t serve immediate purpose or ends up being in their way doesn’t stand a chance.

We are in the midst of massive extinction!

When you Google it, you might get different numbers from different sources but either way the numbers are alarming.

One source lists the rate of extinction as high as 3 species per hour! Another source claims that 35 – 150 species of life become extinct every day!

By partnering with humans our chances of survival are astronomically higher.

There are about 9 to 10 thousand wolves in the US and 50 to 60 thousand in Canada. (source: World Wide Wolf Population)

There are about 77.5 million owned dogs in the US alone! (source: The Humane Society of the United States)

From the very beginning it was about survival for both us and humans.

Of course humans were much more fun then. There were no leashes and no fences–just freedom, hunting, and good food.

Only a few privileged ones get to do those things with their humans today.

Instead of open plains to roam there are highways, parking lots and supermarkets. Try breaking loose and the most likely result will be yourself as a hood ornament!

Sticking with humans is the sane thing to do, even if it means captivity and dumb rules.

Learning how to train them to do your bidding takes the edge off that.
